Cleaning the Lens of Perception

Your lens of perception is how you see the world.  It's defines what you let through, and what is filtered out.  Over time dirt builds up blocking the ability to see and think clearly.  The dirt comes in the form of lack of knowledge, misguided beliefs, half-truths, judgment, prejudices, taking things personally, being stuck in a rut, false science, bias, fear, misinformation, laziness, indebtedness, the cult of consumerism and a run-away ego.

Expectations, positive or negative. have a powerful effect on your life. Whatever the category, work, school, relationships, creativity, expectations are the map our minds use to script choices and decisions subconsciously.  It’s impossible to override the subliminal thoughts with our best hopes and intentions, it has to come from a place of belief in things turning out the way we want them to, or possibly even better than we expect!

Think twice

How often do you act without thinking?  Sometimes the short-term goal puts the blinders on and blocks your vision from the bigger picture.  One time I needed to get back to college after a summer break where I sold my car to surf in Hawaii.  Having burned up most of my cash the $30 bus fare to Chico seemed a little much so I had my dad drop me on the freeway so I could hitchhike up from San Jose.

Know your limits

I love the timeless line in the Clint Eastwood film Magnum Force: “a man’s got to know his limitations”.  As I recall Dirty Harry was lecturing some punk on what not to do, but it’s good advise for all of us.  Now this may seem counter-intuitive in a book on possibilities but it’s not.  Possibilities are rooted in leveraging strengths, on building over experience toward mastery.  Knowing your limits keeps you moving along a realistic path toward whatever goal you are pursuing.
