Get what you expect

Expectations, positive or negative. have a powerful effect on your life. Whatever the category, work, school, relationships, creativity, expectations are the map our minds use to script choices and decisions subconsciously.  It’s impossible to override the subliminal thoughts with our best hopes and intentions, it has to come from a place of belief in things turning out the way we want them to, or possibly even better than we expect! You will find this pattern shows up repeatedly in business, sports, politics, personal life.  Successful people believe in their abilities, expect results, and get them.  Placebo drugs are another example of this power.  Patients who believe they are getting the medicine, get better.

Expectations, positive or negative. have a powerful effect on your personal policy.  Consider the dilemma the guards in jails and prisons face each day.  Charged with the job of incarcerating people they have the ability to make a dramatic impact on the prisoners.  Most often the guards have negative expectations of the inmates and get bad behavior in return.  Too often prisoners are released only to return. At one prison in Kentucky prisoners are given the opportunity to train dogs and horses that are sold or placed in needy homes.  The guards are trained to expect good behavior and guess what, everybody wins.  Inmates learn a skill that keeps many from coming back, guards get to treat people like humans.

To get the confidence to create positive expectations do the work.  Make time to research how others navigate your area of interest successfully.  Take courses that deliver useful information and look for mentors to guide you.  Learn the tools of the trade then practice, practice and more practice. It may not start out perfect but will keep you moving in the right direction.
